Common questions about request debt validation
What is debt validation?
Under the FDCPA, you have 30 days from a collector's first contact to request written validation of the debt. The collector must stop collection efforts until they provide proof.
What should a debt validation letter include?
Request the original creditor name, the amount owed, proof that the collection agency is licensed in your state, and documentation showing you owe the debt. Send it certified mail within 30 days.
What happens after I send a validation request?
The collector must cease collection activities until they validate the debt. If they cannot validate it, they must stop contacting you and remove it from your credit report.
